Champoluc (Monterosa Ski), Italy

Unspoilt village with magnificent high mountain scenery...

*  Long runs and vast off-piste potential...

*  Exceptionally quiet slopes outside weekends...

Champoluc is the largest of three unspoilt villages that make up Italy’s stunning Monterosa region, a fabulously scenic network of runs set beneath some of the highest peaks in the Alps. The area is almost deserted outside weekends, when it can feel as though you have the whole mountain to yourself.

The skiing

The Monterosa Ski area is unusual in being one of the largest in the Alps in terms of area yet offering very few pistes. Yet this is precisely why it is so special, with epic long runs away from the lift system and a wild unspoilt beauty that can be elusive in more commercialised resorts.

The runs themselves are best suited to adventurous intermediates, but there is masses of off-piste including some epic heli-runs off Monte Rosa (the second highest mountain in the Alps).

The resort

Champoluc is a traditional Italian village with a friendly, low-key atmosphere. A conspicuous lack of modern development adds to its rustic charm. The resort is very quiet during the week, but comes to life at weekends with a surprisingly varied choice of bars and restaurants.

For non-skiers there is an ice rink and lots of winter walks, but otherwise few off-slope diversions.
