Snow reliability
The skiing
Avoriaz is the epicentre of the vast Portes du Soleil, which offers 650km of pistes spread across both sides of the Franco-Swiss border.
Avoriaz itself has an excellent mix of runs for all levels including a number of genuinely challenging blacks. Intermediates and above will be keen to try the Portes du Soleil circuit which allows you to rack up the miles (in both directions) taking in many different resorts along the way. And if that still isn't enough, nearby Morzine and Les Gets provide further interesting options, particularly if the snow is good.
Avoriaz also caters well for beginners, with extensive snow-sure nursery slopes and a fabulous long green to progress to.
Avoriaz is very proactive on the snowboarding and free-styling scene and boasts a number of popular parks including the "Stash"- a huge area of ecologically friendly tricks and jumps in the forests of Les Lindarets.
The resort
Traffic-free Avoriaz has been designed first and foremost with families in mind and is one of the most convenient resorts in the French Alps – you can ski above it, below it, beside it and through it.
Although purpose-built, all the buildings are wood-clad and their angular design blends in neatly to the rocky surroundings. The resort centre is compact – essentially one main street – but quite lively with a good choice of shops, bars, cafés and restaurants.
Facilities for non-skiers are better than in many purpose-built resorts, and now include an impressive indoor water park Aquariaz.
