Val d’Isère, France
* Huge ski area shared with Tignes that is suitable for all abilities...
* Excellent snow record...
* Some of the best lift-served off-piste in the world...
* Attractive village centre and lively nightlife...
For many, Val d’Isère is simply the best ski resort in the world. Not only are its slopes (shared with Tignes) vast and varied, they are also exceptionally snow-sure, with no less than two glaciers and an extent of high altitude skiing that is unmatched in the Alps.
Although the skiing suits all levels (there are plenty of easy runs higher up) the area is best suited to more adventurous types and offers some of the best lift-served off-piste in the world. The resort is also appealing with a lively atmosphere and charming pedestrianised centre.

The skiing
Val d'Isère shares a huge area of world class skiing with nearby Tignes, known as L'Espace Killy.
Although often regarded as unsuitable for beginners, Val d'Isère has a perfectly adequate nursery slope and a lot of easy runs on the top half of its mountains (from where you can return to base by lift).
Intermediates are superbly catered for, with mile upon mile of easy cruising up top and plenty of challenges lower down. There are also several genuine blacks dotted around, including the infamous Face, which hosted the 1992 Olympic men's downhill. What really draws the experts though is the quality and quantity of off-piste on offer, much of it accessible from the lifts.
The resort
With its vibrant main street and carefully restored old village centre, Val d'Isère is much more attractive than most high French resorts. Although all our hotels are within easy walking distance of the slopes, Val d'Isère boasts one of the most efficient bus systems in the Alps, running every few minutes all the way out to La Daille and Le Fornet (satellite resorts and alternative ways up the mountain).
Val d'Isère offers a wide choice of après-ski entertainment, starting on the slopes and continuing late into the night. This is also a reasonable resort for non-skiers, with lots of shops, an excellent new sports centre and a few interesting winter walks.
