The skiing
Méribel lies at the heart of the vast 3 Valleys network, the largest fully linked ski area in the world. For keen piste-bashers, very few places can compare - with mile upon mile of runs in all directions and easy links to other resorts. There are plenty of challenges too, with several genuine blacks and masses of off-piste.
Beginners are better off in Méribel (as opposed to Mottaret) where there are some excellent long greens around the Altiport area, once you have progressed off the nursery slopes.
The resort
Méribel has two main centres – Méribel and Mottaret.
Méribel is by far the larger of the two and is an attractive chalet-style village with an animated centre and vibrant nightlife. There is an excellent sports centre and plenty of other off-slope activities, including walks in the woods, trips up the mountain on the main pedestrian-friendly lifts and even joy-rides on the little planes that operate out of the Altiport.
Purpose-built Mottaret, a little higher up the valley, is super-convenient for the slopes and has the best position in the entire 3 Valleys for exploring the area as a whole. The après-ski scene is, however, much more limited and there is little to do for non-skiers.
