A hidden gem in St Moritz
by Richard Visick, 7 January 2018
Set on the slopes beneath the majestic Corvatsch mountain, at the upper end of the Engadin valley, the 4* superior Hotel Nira Alpina is a hidden gem. The peaceful Swiss village of Silvaplana-Surlej it calls home feels a world away from the glitz and glamour of its more famous neighbour, St Moritz, just 5km down the road.
One of the more recent additions to the portfolio of the Nira Hotels and Resorts Group, the hotel enjoys panoramic views over the area’s seemingly endless supply of high mountains, and turquoise lakes which line the valley.
Location, location, location...
The Nira Alpina is probably the best located hotel in the whole Engadin for skiers, offering the ultimate in skiing convenience, with direct access (via a covered walkway) to the Corvatsch cable-car from its boot room, and skiing right back to the door.
The 2-stage Corvatsch cable-car whisks skiers up to 3,303m in less than 15 minutes. Exit at the mid-station and the area opens out into a wide expanse of north-facing, snow-sure blue and red pistes, with some pretty tree-lined runs back to the valley. Continue up to the top station and you are rewarded with the most magnificent views and a spectacular 9km run all the way into St Moritz.
For less accomplished skiers, and families with young children, there is a gentle nursery slope right outside the hotel.
Luxury and high quality service, in a relaxed atmosphere
Run by award-winning General Manager Claudia Pronk and her fantastic team, the Nira Alpina is less formal than many hotels in nearby St Moritz with a cool and relaxed atmosphere throughout, but seamlessly combines its contemporary ‘design hotel’ style with the highest Swiss standards of service and hospitality.
The hotel’s luxurious bedrooms all have Super King size beds with the finest Swiss-made linen, a contemporary granite & marble bathroom, and a balcony or terrace with spectacular views of Lake Silvaplana and the mountains beyond.
Fabulous spa facilities, restaurants and roof-top bar
For those wanting to unwind after a hard day on the slopes, the fabulous Nira Spa offers a wide range of treatments with products from award-winning spa brand Pure Altitude, together with facilities including sauna, steam room, relaxation rooms, and a vast whirlpool with fountain and underwater relaxation bed.
On the top floor of the hotel, the fabulous ‘Stars’ restaurant not only offers stunning views, but also a culinary tour of the world, with both local specialities and international classics with a significant Asian influence.
The adjacent rooftop bar is the perfect spot to relax with an aperitif in front of the open fire.
Great for families
The hotel is a great choice for families with a range of interconnecting rooms and family suites. With the nursery slope and ski school right outside the hotel, parents can watch their children glide past from the balcony of their room, the hotel bar, the lounge terrace or even from the jacuzzi in the spa.
There is also a kids club offering supervised childcare for children aged 3 years and above, between 4pm and 9pm every day.
