Winter has arrived early in the Alps...
by Fraser Wilkin, 14 November 2019
The Alps have seen huge snowfalls in recent days, especially in Austria and Italy.
Between one and two metres has fallen at altitude in the Dolomites, where resorts such as Selva, Corvara, Arabba and Cortina can now look forward to one of the best starts to their season in a decade.
It’s a similar situation across much of Austria, where resorts such as Sölden, Hintertux and Obertauern are also in incredible shape for mid-November.
With yet more heavy snow on its way, here are four resorts you might like to consider for a pre-Christmas ski trip. They might not be ones you would normally consider for an early December break but, this year, good deep snow cover is already guaranteed!
Arabba
Arabba is the best located ski resort for keen skiers looking to explore the vast Super-Dolomiti ski area, which opens in late November.
Not only does the area offer the world’s best artificial snow-making, but this year there is already tonnes of natural snow. So, what are you waiting for?

Madonna di Campiglio
Not to be outdone by its Sud-Tirol neighbours, Madonna di Campiglio is already open for skiing with more than 2m of settled snow towards the top of its ski area.
If gentle cruising among magnificent Dolomite scenery is your thing, then look no further!
4 nights half board at the Hotel Crozzon in Madonna

Obertauern
Austria has got off to a cracking start to the 2019-20 ski season with over a metre of new snow falling at altitude this week in Obertauern, which occupies a particularly snowy spot close to the main Alpine ridge.
At little more than an hour from Salzburg airport, and with a compact but varied, super snow-sure ski area, it’s a fantastic resort for a family ski holiday.
4 nights full board at the Hotel Steiner in Obertauern
From £795pp*
(including flights and private transfers)
Champoluc
With much of the weather coming from the south this week, Champoluc has seen a lot of snow at altitude with even bigger falls to come over the next few days.
If you love uncrowded slopes and unspoilt villages, Champoluc is a true delight to ski, and one of the best value ski resorts in the Alps to boot.
4 nights half board at the Hotel La Rouja in Champoluc
From £595pp*
